Practical AI in software development: where it helps and where it should wait

AI is useful when it shortens a real task. It is expensive decoration when the underlying workflow is still unclear.

Start from the task, not the model

Practical AI software development begins with a task someone already does slowly: classifying tickets, drafting product copy, matching SKUs, summarizing a support thread, or generating first-pass test cases. If you cannot name the task and the acceptable error, you are not ready to pick a model.

PKT Info Tech uses AI in two ways. Internally, it speeds planning, UI exploration, and coding assistance under human review. In products, we add AI only when it changes a user or operations outcome we can describe in one sentence.

Where AI-assisted engineering is already worth it

Coding assistants help experienced developers move faster on boilerplate, migrations, and test scaffolds. They do not replace architecture, security review, or someone who understands the business rules. We treat AI output as a draft. Review is the product.

The same is true for content and UX. AI can propose page structure or microcopy. A designer and a domain owner still decide what ships. That mix is how we keep delivery faster without pretending the software wrote itself.

Product features that usually pay off first

Search that understands messy queries, document summarization, and assisted data entry are common first wins. They sit on top of data you already have. Chatbots that promise to run the company sit much later, after policies and source-of-truth systems exist.

For ecommerce, recommendations and operations drafts can help once catalog data is clean. For SaaS, an assistant that fills a form from a note can save minutes every day. In both cases the fallback must be a normal UI. AI should not be the only way to finish the job.

  • A human can complete the same task without the model
  • You log prompts, outputs, and corrections for later improvement
  • Sensitive data is filtered before it leaves your environment
  • You measure time saved or error rate, not novelty

Governance is part of the build

Who can see customer data in prompts? What is stored? What happens when the model is wrong in a way a customer will notice? Those questions belong in discovery. We would rather ship a smaller assistant with clear limits than a feature that invents policy.

If a vendor leads with a model name and no workflow, keep asking. Practical AI is integration work: APIs, permissions, evaluation, and a product surface people will actually use.
