Shopify vs WooCommerce in India: how to choose a store platform

Shopify is often faster to launch. WooCommerce is often freer to shape. Indian brands should pick based on catalog, GST operations, and how unique checkout needs to be.

The decision is operational, not tribal

Shopify versus WooCommerce is a popular argument and a poor way to start. For Indian D2C, wholesale, and regional brands the better question is: who will run the catalog, how complex is pricing, and which systems already hold stock, GST invoices, and customer conversations.

PKT Info Tech builds on both platforms and on custom stacks. We recommend Shopify when you want hosting, checkout, and app ecosystem to stay simple. We recommend WooCommerce when WordPress already carries the brand site or you need deeper control of the catalog and checkout logic.

Where Shopify usually wins

Shopify reduces the number of things you must host and patch. Themes, payments, and a large app store get a catalog live quickly. That matters when the merchandising team wants to launch collections without waiting on a developer for every change.

The trade-off is platform rules and app costs. Unique checkout steps, unusual B2B pricing, or heavy ERP logic can become a stack of paid apps. If the store is the product and the rules are standard, Shopify is often the calmer path.

Where WooCommerce usually wins

WooCommerce lives on WordPress, so content, blog, and store can share one admin. You own hosting and can extend almost anything with plugins or custom code. For brands that already invest in WordPress SEO and editorial work, that is a real advantage.

The trade-off is ownership of performance and security. A slow host, too many plugins, or unoptimized images will hurt conversion. WooCommerce is not weaker. It is more operational. You need a development partner who treats hosting, caching, and updates as part of the build.

  • Choose Shopify for speed, hosted checkout, and a simpler ops load
  • Choose WooCommerce when WordPress and custom commerce logic matter
  • Choose custom when marketplace, wholesale, or pricing rules will fight both

India-specific checks before you commit

Map GST invoicing, shipping partners, COD, WhatsApp order updates, and how returns are handled today. Both platforms can support Indian payments; the integration quality varies by app and by how clean your SKU data is.

Also price the second year, not only launch. Shopify subscriptions and apps add up. WooCommerce hosting, maintenance, and plugin licenses add up differently. We put those numbers next to catalog size and expected change frequency before we recommend a platform.

You can still change later—with a cost

Migrations are possible. They are never free. URL structure, reviews, redirects, and customer accounts all need a plan. If you are unsure, a short discovery workshop is cheaper than building on the wrong platform for a year.

If you want a side-by-side recommendation for your catalog, we do that on the ecommerce development page and in consultation—not as a one-line default.
